Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *hepoinen, a diminutive of now-obsolete hobu. Further origin unknown, but possibly a Germanic loan, or from some descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos. Compare eg. Ancient Greek ἵππος (híppos, horse). Cognate with Finnish hevonen.
