From Middle High German heln, from Old High German helan, from Proto-Germanic *helaną. Cognate with helmet, hele, Swedish hälare ("fence, receiver and seller of stolen goods").

Usage notes

The verb is not all too frequent. Nominal constructions, such as Hehlerei betreiben or als Hehler arbeiten, are more common.
