Etymology

From West Old Turkic keriš-, kureš ("wrestling"), from the word root *küre- ("to wrestle"), from Proto-Turkic *gErüĺ- (to fight, to struggle). Cognate with Kypchak küreş . Further cognates include Tatar köräš, kuraš, Uighur küräš, Azerbaijani güläš, Chuvash kǝreš/кӗреш(ӳ), Tuva xüres, Kyrgyz keriš, küröš, Kazakh keris, küres/курес, Bashkir көрәш (etc.).

Equivalent to gür (strong) + -eş.
