From Proto-Brythonic *webussu (compare Cornish gweus, Breton gweuz), compound of *we- (compare gwefl (“animal lip”)) and Proto-Celtic *bussu (“lip”) (compare Scottish Gaelic bus, Old Irish busóc (“kiss”)), from Proto-Indo-European *bus- (“to kiss”) (compare Latin bāsium (“kiss”), Lithuanian bučiúoti, Albanian buzë (“mouth”), Persian بوسیدن (bōsīdan, “to kiss”)).
