From Proto-Germanic *galīkaz, equivalent to ġe- + līċ. Cognate with Old Frisian gelīk, Old Saxon gilīk (Middle Low German gelîk), Dutch gelijk, Old High German gilīh (German gleich), Old Norse glíkr ( > English like), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (galeiks).

Cognate with Old English līċ (body, corpse).
