Etymology
From Old High German [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *ferudi (“last year”), from Proto-Indo-European *peruti (“last year”). Cognate with Cimbrian bèart, obsolete German fert, Icelandic í fyrra, Faroese í fjør, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish i fjor; also Old Armenian հերու (heru), Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi), Sanskrit परुत् (parut), Persian پار (pâr). Doublet of Fiire (“firn”).
