From Middle High German. Cognate with Old Norse fjǫrð (last year). From Proto-Indo-European *peruti. Cognates include Sanskrit परुत् (parut, last year), Persian پار (pār, last year), Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi, last year), Lithuanian pernai (last year) and Old Armenian հերու (heru, last year).
