Etymology
From Middle French, Old French ferir, from Latin ferīre (“strike”), present active infinitive of feriō, of Proto-Indo-European origin.

Conjugation
This verb is defective and is virtually never conjugated in Modern French, except in a few set phrases or as a mark of extreme archaism. Most of its uses stem from variations on sans coup férir. This verb is impersonal and is conjugated only in the third-person singular.
