frikë

Albanian

Alternative forms
  • frîgë

Etymology

Zero−grade form of Proto-Albanian *(s)pṛkeH2, from Proto-Indo-European *per- (to attempt, try, research, risk). Close to Latin perīculum (danger, risk, trial), Ancient Greek πεῖρα (peîra, trial, attempt), Old English fǣr. Assumption of a loan from Byzantine Greek φρίκη (phríkē) seems not plausible, because velar followed by front vowel would be palatalized. Compare also Romanian frică (fear, fright), Aromanian fricã (fear, fright).

Pronunciation

Noun

frikë f (indefinite plural frika, definite singular frika, definite plural frikat)
