From Middle French, from Latin epitome, epitoma, from Ancient Greek ἐπιτομή (epitomḗ, an abridgment, also a surface-incision), from ἐπιτέμνω (epitémnō, I cut upon the surface, cut short, abridge), from ἐπί (epí) + τέμνω (témnō, to cut).
