From Vulgar Latin cottizāre or cottidiāre (compare Aromanian cutedz, cutidzari, Venetian scotezàr, Istriot cutisà, Aquileian scuttia, compare also Albanian kuxoj), from Ancient Greek κοττίζω (kottízō, to play craps, shoot dice).
