control car (plural control cars)

  1. (railways) A non-powered railroad car from which the train may be controlled - equipped with a driver's cabin, front lights and other equipment required for a locomotive, located at the end of the train opposite to that of the locomotive. This arrangement allows the train to be safely driven into both directions at full speed without changing the configuration of the train.
