Vietnamese

Etymology

From Middle Vietnamese chuối or chuếi (banana), Proto-Vietic *caːjʔ or *cɔːjʔ (banana). Cognates include Tho /caːj³/, Hung /caːj/, Muong chuổi (banana), Semai /ɟai/, Temiar /ɟai/, Jehai /ɟaj/. Shorto (2006) compares Vietnamese chuối to Proto-Mon-Khmer *t1luəyʔ, though he expects Vietnamese reflex to be **truối instead. Cognates outsides Vietic are Proto-Palaungic *klɔɔj; Proto-Khmuic *tlɔːj (whence Khmu [script needed] (tɘlɔ́:y)) (SEALang).

Also compare Proto-Tai *kluəjᶜ (banana), whence Thai กล้วย (glûai).
