From Proto-Baltic *bēr-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-, *bʰēr- (shiny, light brown). Cognates include Lithuanian bėras (bay (of horses)), Proto-Germanic *beran (bear) (Old High German bëro, German Bär, English bear).[1]
