bürümek

Turkish

Etymology

From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (büri-, to close, cover). Since it is not attested during Old Turkic period, Nişanyan thinks it may be back-formation from Old Turkic [script needed] (bürün-, to be covered) where -n is reflexive suffix in both Turkish and Old Turkic,[1] see bürünmek (to be covered). However compare Turkmen büremek (to cover), Yakut бүрүй (bürüy, to cover), Dolgan бүрүй (to cover). From Proto-Turkic *bürü-, *bür-ke- (to cover up).[2] Compare Mongolian бүрий (bürij, dusk).
