From Vulgar Latin *bottia, a Germanic borrowing, from Frankish *boce (knob), from Old High German bozzan (to beat), from Proto-Germanic *bautaną (to push, strike). Compare French bosse, Occitan bossa; also Romanian bot.

Alternatively, a northern variant of Italian boccia, from a Latin root *buttia, from Latin buttis.
