bibbern

The contemporary form since the 19th century from Low German bibbern, probably already Middle Low German *bibberen, a frequentative of bēven (Old Saxon bibōn), cognate of German beben. Compare Dutch bibberen (1700). In spite of the late attestations, these informal verbs might be rather old in view of the etymologically regular gemination -ēv- → -ibb-, though this can also be due to analogy. Earlier High German variants are bebern, bebbern (18th c.), perhaps also pöpern (East Central German, late 17th c.). These are formed directly from beben.
