From Proto-Finnic *aitta. Related to Estonian ait.

  1. granary or other unheated farm storehouse of relatively firm build, used as a storage of various goods which are relatively valuable and not too voluminous. Compare with lato and vaja.
  2. (figuratively) granary (fertile area especially suitable for farming); used normally with a modifier as in ruoka-aitta or vilja-aitta.
