From Old High German zanga from an original *tanga, from Proto-Indo-European; compare Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌷𐌾𐌰𐌽 (tahjan, “to tear”), Dutch tang. Non-Germanic cognates include Ancient Greek δάκνω (dáknō, “I bite”), Albanian darë (“tongs”), Gheg Albanian danë, Sanskrit दशति (daśati, “to bite”).
