Schnauze

See also: schnäuze

German

Alternative forms

  • Schnauße (obsolete)

Etymology

From Middle Low German snûte, whence also later German Schnute (pouting mouth). Cognate with Dutch snuit, whence probably English snout. The forms Schnauße and somewhat later Schnauze are artificial adaptions to High German consonantism, probably under the influence of schnäuzen (to blow one’s nose), cognate of Middle Low German snüten, which is only remotely related to the noun, however. An original High German cognate may be at hand in Central Franconian Schnüss, Hunsrik Schniss, Luxembourgish Schnëss.
