Etymology

From Middle High German schlūch (“molted snakeskin; tube, hose”). Related to German schlüpfen (“to slip”), an intensive form of schliefen (Alemannic German schlüüfe) (now a regional synonym), which is related closely to schleifen (“to drag, pull around”) (Alemannic German schleipfe), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *slaipijaną (“to cause to slide, to pull along, to drag”). Cognate with German Schlauch.
