From an earlier Samãos. Attested as Samanos in local early Medieval Latin documents, it being the name of a local monastery founded under Suevic or Gothic rule in the 6th or 7th century; either from Proto-Germanic *samana, cf. Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐌼𐌰𐌽𐌰 (samana, together) and Old High German gisemini (congregation), or from a a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, from a Celtic cognate of this Germanic forms.
