From *sǫ- (together) + *sěděti (to sit). Compare Lithuanian viensė̃dis, Sanskrit संसद् f (saṃsát/saṃsád), संसद m (saṃsādas), Vedic Sanskrit अप्सुषद् (apsuṣad), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬌𐬋𐬌𐬱𐬀𐬛- (maiδiiōišad-), Latin praeses.
