Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plútas, from Proto-Indo-European *plutós, from *plew- (to fly). Equivalent to the 0-grade of pre-Slavic *pelti (to fold, to flow) + *-ъtъ. Cognate with Latvian pluts (raft, ferry) (Possibly a borrowing from Slavic).
