Etymology
The root of the word is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dóws (“shoulder, clavicle”). The prepositional syllable is either the prefix *pa- (“close, secondary”) or the noun *pazъ (“cleft”). The term is a direct cognate with Latvian paduse, while further away it is related to Persian دوش (duš, “shoulder”).
