The root of the word is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dóws (shoulder, clavicle). The prepositional syllable is either the prefix *pa- (close, secondary) or the noun *pazъ (cleft). The term is a direct cognate with Latvian paduse, while further away it is related to Persian دوش (duš, shoulder).
