Etymology

Related to *màzati (“to oil, to anoint, to smear”). Generally reconstructed as *màz-slo, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mōˀź-sla.

  • Derksen: Probably cognate with Lithuanian mė́šlas (“manure”), Latvian mȩ̂sls (“manure”). Sometimes instead derived from earlier Proto-Slavic *màz-tlo.
  • See *màzati.
