From Proto-Indo-European *dʰoh₁y-eye-, from *dʰeh₁(y)-. Cognate with Latvian dêt (to suck), Sanskrit धयति (dháyati, to suck), Latin fellō (to suck), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌳𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (daddjan, to breastfeed).
