Possibly calque of Iranian (cp. Old Median Bagadāta- (god-given, given by god)) or calque of Ancient Greek Θεόδοτος (Theódotos) or Ancient Greek Θεόδωρος (Theódōros, Theodore; literally 'gift of God'). Morphologically from *bogъ (god) + *danъ (given), the passive participle of *dati (to give).
