Possibly from *ǵh₂l- (to nourish); compare Greek γάλα (gála, milk), Hittite [script needed] (galak-, to soothe). According to Mallory and Adams (1997), some forms may be influenced by association with unrelated *gl̥h₁éys (mouse).
