From Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (away, off). Cognate to Messapic [Term?] (apa, from, out of, by),[1] Ancient Greek ἀπά (apá, away, off), Sanskrit अप (apá).

Etymology 2

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁op-eio/e-, from *h₁ep- (to take). Cognate to Hittite 𒂊𒅁 (epp-, to take, seize, grab), Latin apīscor (I grasp), Ancient Greek ἅπτω (háptō, fasten, bind), Old Armenian ունիմ (unim, possess), Sanskrit आप्त (āpta, to reach, gain, take possession of), आप्नोति (āpnoti, to obtain, to grasp).[2] The verb is suppletive with past dhashë and participle dhënë from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃-.[3]
