From Middle High German pfütze, from Old High German pfuzzi, from Latin puteus (pit, well). The same word in a Low German form is Pütt (mine shaft). Related to Luxembourgish Pëtz, Dutch put, English pit, French puits, Spanish pozo, Italian pozzo.
