Etymology

An improper simplification of the McCune-Reischauer romanization Hamgyŏng of Korean 함경 (Hamgyeong Do), from Sino-Korean 咸鏡 and (administrative circuit, province), from its one-time principal cities Hamhung (咸興) and Kyongsong (鏡城).
