From French Copte, from Egyptian Arabic قُفْط, قُبْط (Copts), back-formation from قُفْطِيّ (Coptic), قِفْطِيّ ((same)), قُبْطِيّ ((same)), قِبْطِيّ ((same)), from Coptic ⲅⲩⲡⲧⲓⲟⲥ (guptios, Egyptian), ⲕⲩⲡⲧⲁⲓⲟⲥ (kuptaios, Egyptian), from Late Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios), from earlier Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos).
