Etymology 1

Probably of Proto-Indo-European origin and cognate with Sanskrit -अद्- (-ad-), Avestan 𐬆𐬜‎ (əδ), Ancient Greek -αδ- (-ad-). Compare Sanskrit दृषद् (dṛṣad, “rock”), Ancient Greek δειράς (deirás, “ridge of a chain of hills”), genitive δειράδος (deirádos).

-ատ • (-at)

  1. Found in արմատ (armat), հաստատ (hastat) and perhaps աղքատ (ałkʿat), անքատ (ankʿat), փինատ (pʿinat).

Etymology 2

From the root of հատանեմ (hatanem, “to cut”), with the loss of h-. Compare the pair փայտահատ (pʿaytahat) : փայտատ (pʿaytat).
