Usage notes

Note the following properties:

  • Triggers the first Slavic palatalisation and palatalisation of stem-final /л/.
  • After coronal obstruents this suffix is written -чик (-čik). Stem-final /ч/ is written т.
  • The suffix is rarely stressed. (When stressed, it is inflected with ending stress.) When added to an ending-stressed lemma, the stress goes on the last syllable of the lemma's stem; otherwise, the stress remains where it is. The main exception is verbs in unstressed -овать (-ovatʹ), where the stress is drawn onto the syllable preceding the suffix (compare similar behavior with -ка (-ka)).
