Note the following properties:

• The suffix replaces final -ть of the infinitive, preserving the preceding vowel. However, the vowel sometimes changes, as in налогоплате́льщик (nalogoplatélʹščik) above (informally often pronounced as if spelled налогоплати́льщик).
• The corresponding feminine ends in -льщица (-lʹščica).
• The stress is often drawn onto the preceding syllable, especially for verbs ending in -ить (-itʹ), as in краси́льщик (krasílʹščik) from кра́сить (krásitʹ); but contrast ню́хальщик (njúxalʹščik, “sniffer (of drugs or tobacco)”) from ню́хать (njúxatʹ, “to sniff”). This contrast is similar to the behavior of -е́ние (-énije) vs. -ание (-anije).
• Not all nouns in -льщик are formed this way. Some are formed by adding -щик (-ščik) onto a noun ending in -л(ь), as in та́бельщик (tábelʹščik, “timekeeper”) from та́бель (tábelʹ, “time sheet”), стеко́льщик (stekólʹščik, “glazier”) from стекло́ (stekló, “glass”).
