-trop

German

Alternative forms

  • -trup

Etymology

With metathesis in the weakened ultima from Middle Low German dorp (village), from Old Saxon thorp, from Proto-Germanic *þurpą. While Low German placenames in -dorp were generally standardized with the High German equivalent -dorf, those with the less transparent variant -trop, -trup often remained unchanged.
