Borrowed from Old French -ier, from Latin -arius. Doublet of the inherited suffix -aio.

-iere m (feminine -iera)

  1. Used to form masculine nouns (often of French origin) that represent a person who makes or sells a specified article; -er, -or.
    giardino (garden) + -ieregiardiniere (gardener)
    gioiello (jewel) + -ieregioielliere (jeweller)
  2. Suffix of a few -ere verbs.
