Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps assimilated from *երո-ջ (*ero-ǰ), from Proto-Indo-European *ero-, from *er- (goat; sheep), and cognate with Ancient Greek ἔριφος (ériphos), Latin aries, Old Irish heirp. For final -ǰ compare երինջ (erinǰ), which probably belongs to the same etymon.
