Etymology

Literally “caught by the hand”, from *ձերբ (*jerb, an old ablative of ձեռն (jeṙn)) + -ա- (-a-) + կալում (kalum). The whole formation is a calque of Middle Persian dstglwb' (*dast-graw, captivity, literally caught by the hand).
