The older form is թէկն (tʿēkn), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)te/o(i)gʷo-. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic стєгно (stegno) and Old Irish tóib, táeb.

թեկն • (tʿekn)

1. top of the shoulder, acromion; shoulder bone, shoulder; arm

   թեկն ածել զիրիք ― tʿekn acel zirikʿ ― to attempt; to aspire to, to pant for, to seek; to embroil; to sell off, to dispose of; to explain oneself, to pretend to be

   զվարդապետի, զիշխանի թեկն ածել ― zvardapeti, zišxani tʿekn acel ― to pass oneself off for a doctor, for a prince; to play the grandee, to lord it

   թեկն ածել զաւագութեան, զպատուոյ ― tʿekn acel zawagutʿean, zpatuoy ― to desire eagerly, to covet the primacy, to aspire to honours

   թեկն ածել ումեք ― tʿekn acel umekʿ ― to favour, to support, to assist, to protect, to aid, to defend

   թեկն ածել ընդդէմ ուրուք ― tʿekn acel ənddēm urukʿ ― to rebel, to revolt

   թեկն ի թեկին ― tʿekn i tʿekin ― strutting, looking big, playing the swell, walking or acting in a stately, imposing or boastful manner

2. (in the plural) back (of the body), shoulders

   ի թիկանց, ի թիկունս (կոյս), զթիկամբք ― i tʿikancʿ, i tʿikuns (koys), ztʿikambkʿ ― behind, from behind, backward

   բարձրացաւ քան զամենայն ժողովուրդն թիկամբք չափ ի վեր ― barjracʿaw kʿan zamenayn žołovurdn tʿikambkʿ čʿapʿ i ver ― he was taller than all the people from the shoulders upward (head and shoulders taller than all the people)

   թիկունս դարձուցանել ― tʿikuns darjucʿanel ― to turn the back, to take to fight, to flee

   թիկունս տալ արեւելից ― tʿikuns tal arewelicʿ ― to turn to the west

   դառնալ ի թիկունս (կոյս) ― daṙnal i tʿikuns (koys) ― to turn back, to turn one's back, to fly

   ի թիկունս առաքել ― i tʿikuns aṙakʿel ― to send back, away

3. back, hind part of an object (e.g. a book)

   թիկունք նաւին ― tʿikunkʿ nawin ― poop of a ship

4. (in the plural, figuratively) aid, succour, assistance, backing up

   ի թիկունս հասանել, կալ, իջանել ― i tʿikuns hasanel, kal, iǰanel ― to fly to the rescue, to send aid or reinforcements, to give a helping hand

   թիկունս առնել/թիկունս օգնականութեան առնել ― tʿikuns aṙnel/tʿikuns ōgnakanutʿean aṙnel ― to form an alliance, to enter into an alliance, to confide in, to recur to, to rely on

   զթիկունս հաստ առնել ― ztʿikuns hast aṙnel ― to strengthen oneself, to be reinforced
