Etymology
Since Müller considered a reduplicated formation inherited from Proto-Indo-European *tap- (“to dip”), with Proto-Slavic *topìti (“to drown”) and Old Armenian թօն (tʿōn, “rain, shower”) as cognates. On the other hand, Petersson derives all of these from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to melt; to flow, stream”) extended with *-p-.
