Tuesday is a day of the week occurring after Monday and before Wednesday.  According to some commonly used calendars (esp. in the U.S.A.), it is the third day of the week.  According to international standard ISO 8601, however, it is the second day of the week.  The English name is derived from Old English Tiwesdæg and Middle English Tewesday, meaning "Tīw's Day", the day of Tiw or Týr, the god of single combat, victory, and heroic glory in Norse mythology.  Tiw was equated with Mars in the interpretatio germanica, and the name of the day is a translation of Latin dies Martis.

Quotes

  • Men prayed to Tyr for victory in battle, and justice in peace.  He is renown for his wisdom as well as his valor.  Tuesday is named in his honor.  In some places he was called Tiwaz and was associated with the Roman God, Mars, the Celtic God Nadu [sic], as well as the Indian God, Mitra.  Tyr was the original God of war, and the precursor of Odin, much in the same way that Mars was the God of war in Rome, and once held a higher place than Jupiter.

Quotes from literature

  • "And he respects Owl, because you can't help respecting anyone who can spell TUESDAY, even if he doesn't spell it right; but spelling isn't everything. There are days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn't count."
  • I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.
    • J. Wellington Wimpy from Popeye.[citation needed]

Quotes from television

  • Sam Winchester:  My point is I've lived through every possible Tuesday.  I've watched you die every possible way.  I have ripped apart the Mystery Spot, burnt it down, tried everything I know to save your life and I can't.  No matter what I do, you die.  And then I wake up.  And then it's Tuesday again.

Quotes from film

  • Governor Santini is brought to you today by Soylent Red and Soylent Yellow—and, new, delicious, Soylent Green: the "miracle food" of high energy plankton, gathered from the oceans of the world.  Due to its enormous popularity, Soylent Green is in short supply, so remember: Tuesday is Soylent Green day.
