Daniel LaRusso

  • You know... When my father died, I spent a lot of time thinking maybe I wasn't such a great son. It seemed to me like I could have listened to him a little more, spent some more time with him... I felt so guilty, you know, like he did everthing for me, and I didn't do anything for him. Then one day it occurred to me... that I did the greatest thing of all for him just before he died: I was there with him, and I held his hand, and I said goodbye.

Mr. Kesuke Miyagi

  • [repeating Kreese's words] Mercy is for the weak. We do not train to be merciful here. A man face you he is enemy. Enemy deserve no mercy.
  • Aha... here are the two rules of Miyagi-Ryu Karate. Rule number one: "Karate for defense only." Rule number two: "First learn rule number one."
  • Daniel-san, never put passion before principle. Even if win, you lose.
  • Six hundred dollars say he break all six.

Sato

  • Out of respect for my teacher, I give you three days to mourn. When finish, I come back. You prepare to join him.
  • Miyagi, I wait long time for this. No tricks tonight, or tomorrow, everything gone. Their homes. Their church. Everything...GONE!

Dialogue

Daniel LaRusso: Hey Mr. Miyagi, you know I've been thinking.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: About what, Daniel-san?
Daniel LaRusso: That we should come with some kind of strategy.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: For what?
Daniel LaRusso: My future, my whole tournament career.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Miyagi already have one.
Daniel LaRusso: Really? What is it?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Early retirement.

Daniel LaRusso: You could have killed him.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Hai.
Daniel LaRusso: Well, why didn't you?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Because Daniel-san, for person with no forgiveness in heart, living worse punishment than death.

Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Ah, Daniel-san! Must've been some senior prom. What happened?
Daniel LaRusso: You mean, what didn't happen. First I let Ali borrow the car, and she redesigns my fender. And I don't know what she's done to my engine, but that ain't running right either. And you know what else she's done? She tells me she's fallen in love with some football player from UCLA. Why couldn't she just lie to me or something?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Things could be worse.
Daniel LaRusso: Don't worry, they are. Last night, my mom tells me she got transferred by her company to their new branch in Fresno. Two months. I'm going to spend my entire summer in Fresno. We're supposed to leave tomorrow afternoon.
[Miyagi is examining the car, reaching under its hood]
Daniel LaRusso: You're not gonna be able to fix that.
[No sooner than the words out of Daniel's mouth than Miyagi twists something around; now the engine runs perfectly]
Daniel LaRusso: How'd you do that? What'd you do?

Daniel LaRusso: Hey, what are you building out there?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Guest room.
Daniel LaRusso: Are you expecting company?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Nah, refugee.
Daniel LaRusso: Refugee? Oh yeah, that's great. From where?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Fresno.

Daniel LaRusso: If you and Sato fought, would your father be the referee?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: No referee.
Daniel LaRusso: Then how do you know who wins?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: The one who's dead, doesn't.

Daniel LaRusso: You think you could break a log like that?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Don't know. Never been attacked by a tree.

Sato: So, coward, you return...
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: To settle affairs with father.
Sato: And with me.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Sato, I no fight you.
Sato: Then you die as you have lived: a coward. You see your father, then you see me.

Daniel LaRusso: I don't get something. If Sato hates you so much, why does he give you time to mourn?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Because, Daniel-san, my father was his teacher. Deep in heart, Sato still know right from wrong.
Daniel LaRusso: Then why does he still want to kill you?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: [shrugging] ...Because sometimes, what heart know, head forget.

Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Daniel-san, you alright?
Daniel LaRusso: Yeah... I'm sorry; that was pretty stupid, wasn't it?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: [with a grim smile] Miyagi say that to father when same thing happen. Father agree, was stupid. Father was right.

Daniel LaRusso: Don't those lies bother you?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: No.
Daniel LaRusso: Why not? People might think that they are true.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Lies only become true if person choose to believe.
Daniel LaRusso: Is that an old Okinawa saying?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: No. New Okinawa saying.
Daniel LaRusso: How new?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: [pauses, pretends to think] About ten seconds.

Daniel LaRusso: [referring to their Obon dance] Maybe we should take it on the road!
Kumiko: [confused] But we're on the road.
Chozen: You dance very nice like geisha! [snickers, Daniel and Kumiko run off] His favorite teacher's karate technique... the "let's go".

Daniel LaRusso: Oh no, not again. Hey, I'm looking for any trouble.
Chozen: There maybe trouble looking for you.

Daniel LaRusso: Hey, what's this? What's Sato doing here?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Don't know.
[Sato gets out, dressed in a foreman's outfit]
Sato: I come help rebuild. Here deed to village. [bows low] Forgive me. I beg of you.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: [claps Sato on the shoulder] Oh, Sato, nothing to forgive.
[Daniel and Kumiko approach Sato]
Daniel LaRusso: Mr. Sato? Can I say something? Well, the Obon's coming up, and they really can't have it in the village dance now...
Sato: What do you ask of me?
Daniel LaRusso: Well, can they have it in the castle? I mean that's where it really belongs, isn't it?
Sato: [smiles to Miyagi] Your student become my teacher. [shouts] Obon will be held in castle, now and forever!
[Cheering. Daniel and Sato shake hands]
Sato: One condition: you dance with us. Okay?
Daniel LaRusso: Okay.
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: [puts his hand on theirs] Okay.

[Chozen ambushes Kimiko during her dance routine, and held her at knife-point]
Sato: Chozen, don't do this. I was wrong! Hate is wrong! It's over!
Chozen: [with scorn] I cannot hear you, uncle. I am dead to you, remember?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Chozen, you your uncle's finest student. No disgrace in here.
Chozen: Your student disgraced me. I have been dishonored all because of him!
Daniel LaRusso: Hey, whatever happened, I apologized!
Chozen: Apology will not give me back my honor!
Daniel LaRusso: Well, neither will this!
Chozen: In their eyes it will. No more talk! You cross bridge or I kill her!
[Daniel starts to cross the bridge]
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Daniel-san, this not tournament. This for real.
Chozen: Oi. No bridge.
[Daniel tosses the bridge into the water]
Daniel LaRusso: Now I dropped the bridge! Let her go!
[Chozen throws his knife away]
Chozen: Now...we fight to death!

Daniel LaRusso: Live or die, man.
Chozen: Die.
Daniel LaRusso: Wrong. [honks Chozen's nose]

[Daniel and Kumiko enter a bar where G.I.'s are placing bets on breaking slabs of ice. Toshio sees Daniel enter and runs to get Chozen.]

Daniel LaRusso: [Watching a G.I.] The guy's standing wrong. [The G.I. only breaks through one slab of ice.] See? He did it wrong.
Kumiko: But he looks so strong.
Daniel LaRusso: But you've got to be strong here (head) not here (muscle).
G.I. Bully who is African-American and Bullied Daniel LaRusso: Hey, do you think you can do better, big mouth? Huh? You think you can do better, huh? Drop some ice!
Daniel LaRusso: I don't know.
[Chozen enters the bar and goes up front to Daniel]
Chozen: Well, let us find out huh?
Daniel LaRusso: Maybe some other time, all right?
Chozen: There is no other time!
Daniel LaRusso: Look, whatever problems your uncle has with Mr. Miyagi, they don't have to be our problems.
Chozen: No! We have our own.
Daniel LaRusso: [Kumiko runs out of the bar] Hey, Kumiko, where are you going?
Chozen: You go nowhere! [To Toshio] Call my Uncle, we'll make a bet. Yosh! I give three to one!
Daniel LaRusso: Oh no no! I'm not doing it! I'm not doing it!
Chozen: You have a choice: Broken ice or broken neck.
G.I.: Hey, he's gotta break all three right?
Chozen: Wrong! All six.
Man: Six? All the bets in? All the bets in?
[Kumiko returns with Mr. Miyagi and Yukie]
Kesuge Miyagi: Not all bets!
Daniel LaRusso: Mr. Miyagi am I glad to see you.
Kesuge Miyagi: Don't worry, Daniel-san. Miyagi take care of everything. What odds?
Chozen: 3 to 1, he does not make through ice.
Kesuge Miyagi: How many pieces?
Chozen: Six.
Daniel LaRusso: Okay, let's get out of here.
Kesuge Miyagi: $600 that he can break all six.
Chozen: I cannot cover that!
Sato: [Entering bar] You are covered.
Kesuge Miyagi: Now we have bet.
Daniel LaRusso: Come here, I want to talk to you! [takes Mr. Miyagi aside] Are you crazy? I'm not going to break through that! That guy was twice my size and he only broke through two! What do you expect me to do?!
Kesuge Miyagi: Focus.
Daniel LaRusso: And what are you going to do?
Kesuge Miyagi: Pray.
[Daniel uses breathing technique to concentrate, then strikes slabs of ice, breaking all six. Men in bar cheer. Sato hands over $1800 to Miyagi, but Chozen places his hand on it]
Chozen: We do not honor bet with coward!
Sato: Do not embarrass Uncle again!
[Chozen releases the money]
Kesuge Miyagi: Thank you Sato. Pleasure do business with you.
Daniel LaRusso: Hey, you knew it all along. You didn't have a doubt in your mind. Now what are we going to get with the money?
Kesuge Miyagi: [handing Daniel his share] You get college tuition. We get chinese food. Come.
