The Hollow Men
The Hollow Men (1925) is een gedicht van TS Eliot. Het gedicht is verdeeld in vijf delen en bestaat uit 98 regels waarvan de laatste vier "waarschijnlijk de meest geciteerde regels zijn van elke 20e-eeuwse dichter die in het Engels schrijft".
De laatste strofe is luidt:
- This is the way the world ends
- This is the way the world ends
- This is the way the world ends
- Not with a bang but a whimper.
Het gedicht heeft onder andere referenties naar het Onzevader (in de structuur en zinnen als "For Thine is the Kingdom"), Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and Conrad's An Outcast of the Islands ("Life is very long").
