Alle soorten komen voor in Azië en Afrika.[2] De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door William Edward Duellman, Angela B. Marion en Stephen Blair Hedges in 2016. Oorspronkelijk werd de wetenschappelijke naam Ranetta gebruikt.
