Nancy Wilson
Nancy Wilson, (Chillicothe (Ohio), 20 februari 1937 - Pioneertown (Californië), 13 december 2018[1]) was een Amerikaanse jazz-zangeres, die ook thuis was in het pop-, R&B-, soul- en discogenre.

Carrière
Nancy Wilson begon haar carrière tijdens de jaren 50 als zangeres in nachtclubs in de omgeving van Columbus. Haar eerste platen nam ze op aan het einde van het decennium. Ze tekende bovendien een contract bij het gerenommeerde label Capitol Records en publiceerde daar in 1960 haar debuut Like in Love. Wilson bleef tot 1980 bij het label. Tijdens de jaren 60 werd ze een van de populairste jazz-zangeressen en kreeg zelfs een eigen tv-show, waar ze naast jazz- ook popsongs zong, waardoor haar populariteit alleen nog maar groeide. In 1964 werd ze voor haar vertolking van (You Don't Know) How Glad I Am onderscheiden met een Grammy Award voor de beste zangprestatie op het gebied van de rhythm-and-blues. Ze trad tijdens concerten op met Nat King Cole en Sarah Vaughan. Voor haar Nancy Wilson-show kreeg ze een Emmy Award en ook was ze veelvuldig te gast in andere shows. Bovendien trad ze ook regelmatig op in Las Vegas.
Vanaf het midden van de jaren 70 nam ze meerdere platen in discostijl op, waaronder de kleinere hits I'm Gonna Let Ya (1978) en Life, Love And Harmony (1979) in de R&B-charts. De laatste LP voor Capitol Records, Take My Love (1980) bevatte disco-stukken.
Toen de populariteit van personalityshows afnam, keerde ze tijdens de jaren 80 terug naar de jazz en werkte met muzikanten als Hank Jones, Art Farmer en Henry Johnson. Met Ramsey Lewis speelde ze direct drie albums in: The Two of Us (1984), Simple Plessures (2002) en Meant to Be (2003). Voor haar tot dusver laatste studio-album Turn to Blue (2006) kreeg ze in 2007, zoals in 2005 voor Rare Songs, Very Personal, de Grammy Award voor het beste zangalbum van de jazz.
Wilson overleed na een lange strijd met nierkanker op 81-jarige leeftijd en ze werd begraven in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cathedral City.
Onderscheidingen
In 2004 kreeg ze het Jazz Masters Fellowship van de NEA-Stichting.
Verdere activiteiten
Wilson presenteerde de NPR show Jazz Profiles van 1996 tot 2005. In de serie werden legenden van de jazz voorgesteld in interviews, commentaren, berichten en hun muziek. Wilson en het programma kregen voor de productie in 2001 de George Foster Peabody Award.
