Brandis speelde als kind al in veel reclames en films, waaronder The Stepfather II en It van Stephen King.
Op 11 november 2003 werd Jonathan Brandis opgehangen in zijn appartement gevonden door vrienden. Hij werd naar het ziekenhuis gebracht, maar hulp mocht niet meer baten. De dag erop overleed hij op 27-jarige leeftijd aan zijn verwondingen.
