James Lee Peters

In zijn jeugd leerde hij via collega's van zijn vader professionele ornithologen kennen en nam hij deel aan onderzoekreizen aan de Magdalena-eilanden. In 1912 studeerde hij af aan de Harvard-universiteit. Daarna ging hij door met het maken van reizen door de Verenigde staten en het verzamelen van zoölogische specimens. Hij werkte in opdracht het Bureau of Biological Survey (van het Amerikaanse ministerie van landbouw en visserij) en van het Museum voor vergelijkende zoölogie van de Harvard-universiteit. Hij werd conservator van de afdeling vogels van het museum. Later werd hij lid en vervolgens voorzitter van de International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature en een permanent lid van de American Ornithologists' Union.

Zijn belangrijkste bijdrage aan de ornithologie is het vervaardigen van een complete lijst van (toen bekende) vogelsoorten, gebaseerd op de eerder door Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847-1909) gemaakte lijst. Peters nam ook ondersoorten op in zijn lijst of bepaalde zelf of de status van ondersoort terecht was. Tussen 1931 en 1951 verscheen de lijst in zeven delen. Na zijn dood werd er tot 1987 aan doorgewerkt. De lijst werd ook wel Peters' check-list genoemd. Uiteraard was de lijst gebaseerd op de toenmalig vigerende taxonomische inzichten, dus voor dat DNA-onderzoek naar de taxonomie van de vogels grote veranderingen zou teweeg brengen.

Peters is de auteur van 12 geslachtsnamen waaronder het monotypische geslacht Torreornis (zapatagors), 5 soorten waaronder de Mexicaanse kraai (Corvus imparatus) en meer dan 60 ondersoorten.[1]
