Ilan Pappé

De ouders van Pappé waren Duitse Joden die in de jaren dertig nazi-Duitsland ontvluchtten. Tijdens de Jom Kipoeroorlog deed hij als militair dienst op de Golanhoogten. Hij studeerde aan de Hebreeuwse Universiteit van Jeruzalem en promoveerde aan de Universiteit van Oxford. Zijn proefschrift werd ook zijn eerste boek: Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1948–1951. Van 1984 tot 2007 was hij lector in de politieke wetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Haifa. Eveneens was hij van 1993 tot 2000 werkzaam als academisch directeur van het Givat Haviva's Joods-Arabisch Centrum voor Vrede en zat hij van 2000 tot 2008 het Emil Touma Instituut voor Palestijnse studies voor. Tussentijds trachtte hij als lid van Hadash in 1996 en 1999 vergeefs in de Knesset verkozen te worden. Sinds 2007 is hij hoogleraar in de geschiedenis aan de Britse Universiteit van Exeter.[1]

Pappé wordt gezien als een van de Nieuwe Historici, die kritisch kijken naar Israëls moderne geschiedenis. Hij verdedigt het Palestijnse verhaal en de analyse van de gebeurtenissen rond de oorlog van 1948 (de Arabisch-Israëlische Oorlog van 1948). In het bijzonder hangt hij de these aan dat de Palestijnen bewust verdreven werden door de Jisjoev en later de Israëlische troepen, als onderdeel van een zelfs al voor de oorlog opgesteld plan.[2]

Vanuit diverse hoeken is er scherpe kritiek op Pappé en zijn manier van werken.[3][4]

Vanwege de negatieve respons in Israël op zijn opvattingen, onder meer vanuit de universiteiten en het parlement, heeft hij zich in 2007 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk gevestigd.
